St Mard - aerodrome for Jasta 23?

In trying to more accurately place units in both RedBaron and the new OFF, I have come up with a puzzle. The Jasta Pilots lists St Mard as the base for Jasta 23 from late 1917 to early 1918. There are several St Mards (I found six), and two are on or about the front lines. Trouble is, by my reckoning both were firmly within French control in late 1917-early 1918. One is on the south side of the Aisne about 12 km NNE of Braine, the other is a few km SW of Roye. The Aisne locality seems closest, but maps of the front line (www.firstworldwar.com/maps) show that French lines on this part of the front ran along the Aisne following the Chemin des Dames assaults, looping north of the river between Berry-au-Bac and Vailly, and well north of St Mard.

So - am I wrong? Is there another, more obscure St Mard? Or is it a typo (St Medard, St Marden, St ?)

Does no one have any clues on this?

Hello Mark66

I guess the Saint Mard you are looking for is in Belgium.
Jasta 23 was in the Verdun sector and the closest St Mard I found is south of Virton, very close to Chenois, where Jasta 34 was based during the same period.

That makes sense to me (and puts them in 5. Armee rather than 7. Armee as shown in TJP). R.

Thanks Gilles! Had another tip to the same effect, so it seems to fit what is known.

...so the Chenois that Jasta 34 was based at was Chenois Belgium, not Chenois, France (SE of Metz)?

Damn - another change...
