I just ordered it from my favorite bookshop and should be getting it any day now. I can hardly wait to read it!
Osprey has also just released another one on "Aces of the RNAS/RFC/RAF". If you like British aviation, this should be an interesting one.
Osprey's book on the Fokker D VII is supposed to be available later this year.

I'll second Rick's endorsement. I haven't received my copy yet > , but I know that Jon has included lots of 'new' photos and color schemes, as well as fascinating first-hand acounts. He has been working on the subject of French pilots and their aircraft for many, many years. He interviewed quite a few of them before they passed on, along with many American airmen.
I know that Harry Dempsey's profile artwork for this volume is as stunning as his previous stuff, too.

i believe as i thumbed through it, i saw Luke's spad depicted in there as well. should be interesting to compare it to the american aces version and see if any corrections/addons were made. i believe several here debated that....

Gentlemen,
I too am delighted to see this one come out. I hope the 12 of G.F. Madon is to be found within. I got the Pegasus of that a/c with the intent of modeling that scheme but haven't gotten into the research yet. So many schemes, so little time.
I am curious about the Luke 13 as well. In 1965 I was young and brash enough to crash the 27th Aero Sqdn reunion held in my town. I was apprehensive but the old gentlemen were delighted that someone of my generation was interested in their war. I don't know who had more fun, them or me.
As a result of this evening, I subsequently interviewed Lukes mechanic ( My Mom had to drive) and he shared a great many stories and details with me. Of particular interest was his comment that of all the folks that had asked him about Luke I had been the only one to ask about the particulars of the color scheme. I had taken along some drawings of Spad camo patterns and he unhesitatingly pointed out which patterns went where. It seems that because of battle damage, Lukes A/c became a hodgepodge of spare parts.
I still have some of those notes and am still looking for others. I did build a model at that time carefully following the instructions of that grand old man. Fortunately I still have it although it is in deep storage with the rest of my adolescent model collection.
Best regards to all,
Terry Crisp

To hell with Luke, tell me does it have combat reports by French aces? It's all about technical details, or has descriptions of combat?
Merci beaucoup, monsieur

well, i just finished the section on the Spad XII. i like that it gives who of the more famous/known aces who had a XII. that is better info that what i have. even some decent pics of fonck, guynemer spads 12's. some techinical is thrown in that is good as well.
unfortunatley for Terry, only Madon's red spad 13 is depicted in profiles and 1 picture.
more to come....
