Mannock's Nieuport

Mannock claimed several victories flying Nieuport B3607. I have seen this aircraft depicted as a Nieuport 13, 23 and 27, even a 24bis! Anyone know which it was?

Osprey's book on "Nieuport Aces of World War 1" shows a Nieuport 23 serial no. B3607 flown by Mannock No 40 Sqn. in late summer 1917. It is in standard aluminum finish with a yellow "cone de penatration".

Further information on Mannock's B3607;

Mannock claimed 6 kills during September 1917, 5 of which were scored flying B3607. Besides the pointed spinner his other identifying insigna was the two black streamers attached to the interplane struts.

This scout returned to 2 ASD on 14 October and in November went to No. 1 Sqn.. B3607 was lost on 9 January 1918 whilst being flown by Lt. E.W. Skelton , who is thought to have collided with another Nieuport over enemy lines.

It is recorded that Mannock had the spinner painted yellow as a reminder, to certain members of his squadron who had once opined that he was a coward.
