If you have ideas to add further aircaft to the list or to split up one aircraft into several pages please inform me. Any hint or help is very helpful ...

Hi Volker,

under Sopwith I would say you are missing the following:

Bat boats
Gunbus
Schneider
Sociable
Baby
Hispano triplane (1 served on home defence)
B1
Cuckoo

you could also split the camel into F1 scout and 2F1 ship's camel, and the 1.5 strutter into 2 seat fighter and single seat bomber.

I assume you don't want machines that did not serve in any sort of war capacity, there were a number of machines used in small numbers for evaluation.

Hello Mike!

Thanks for your ideas. The Sop. Schneider, Baby and Cuckoo are a good idea. The only Gunbus I heard of was made by Vickers. Do you have more details?

Addtionally I´d like to know more about: Bat boats, Sociable, Hispano Triplane and B1. I never heard of them but maybe I know them under another name.

I´ll check if I have enough data to "split up" the Camel and the Strutter.

Volker,

the bat boat was originally an amphibian, basically a pusher float plane with wheels! The 2nd bat boat was sold to Germany in May 1914! The admiralty used them on local coastal duties for a short time.

the gunbus was a very large (50ft span) 4 bay pusher looking not unlike the Vickers Gunbus, I think they sold several to Greece. Used in a limited way by the admiralty.

the sociable was an enlarged tabloid, I think the only one was abandoned in Belgium in September 1914 during the retreat from Antwerp.

The hispano-suisa powered triplane was a bigger version of the Clerget tripe. Two were made, one killed the test pilot due to tail flutter, the second was used by the Manston War Flight on home defence in 1917.

the b1 was a bomber, naval 5 used one on raids from Petite Synthe but I don't think the report was very favourable and the DH4 quite rightly won the day.

I might be able to help if you have difficulty with any RNAS stuff.

French machines off the top of my head not on your list:

Caudron G.6 and R.4; the AR.1 and AR.2 are not Dorand machines; Farman F.20 (although there were a bunch of other Farmans you've missed as well); Hanriot HD.2 and HD.3; the Leotards; Nieuport IV and VI, Nieuport 12bis, 14, 17bis, 21, 23, 24bis, 25 (and not sure if you want to include the training machines); Salmson-Michelin SM.1; Paul Schmitt PS.7 (and others); SPAD SA.4, 14 and 16.

I'm probably missing others as well, but like I said, these are just from the top of my head.

Hello Matt!

Now we all know who is to blame if the CD-Rom will be finished during 2003!
* *

My problem is that that it is not easy to find photos of some of the aircraft you mentioned. Another problem will be technical data and further background information. In your list there are aircraft I never had information about (Leotards, Salmson-Michelin SM.1, some Spads).

I will see if I can fill some of the gaps ...

Thank you very much for your help!

Volker, you're going to have well over 300 aircraft types by the time you're done, maybe even 400!

I need to pull up my list and look at it as well when I'm home.

Leave it to Regulus to get all of the seaplanes done!

VBR,

John
