Ernst Udet's 9th Victory

Colleagues,

Greetings from Ireland on my first post on The Aerodrome. I would be very grateful if anyone could give me further information on Ernst Udet's 9th victory. What I have is: DH4 number A7577 from 57 Squadron left base 5.30 a.m. Claimed by Udet 7.45 a.m. Ascq, south east of Lille. (Source: The Sky Their Battlefield)

Pilot Lieutenant Cecil Barry and observer Second Lieutenant Frederick Falkiner MC were both Irish. Both buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery.

I would appreciate any further other information on what happened before during and after the shooting down. Did Udet/anyone else write about it?

Regards,
Philip

From the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website:

Cecil Barry – born 1897, son of H Harte Barry and Agnes Barry of 19, Cintra Park, Norwood, London. Native of Kanturk, Co. Cork.

Frederick Ewen Baldwin Falkiner – born 1895, son of Henry Baldwin Falkiner and Euphemia Falkiner, of Terenure, Dublin. The website states that he received the Bronze Medal for Military Valour (Italy). However, the entry in the London Gazette (number 30263, 31 August 1917, page 9102) reads 7/14166 Lance-Serjeant (now temporary 2nd Lieut.) Frederick Falkiner, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Since the “flying Falkiner" was with the Royal Irish Rifles, I think there has been some confusion between the two.

The information I have is that Barry and Falkiner were on a reconnaisance flight Roulers-Menin but failed to return.
