Next--in the a/c section of Frontflieger, there is a machine on winter skis. It looks like some sort of Halberstadt, but I'm probably wrong. Wonderful pic. I'll post it.

The carburretor air intake on Mercedes engines are openings on both sides of the of the forward end of the lower crankcase. The Mercedes engines had dual updraft carburretors and the air was taken from the lower crankcase through a duct on the side of the upper crankcase. These two holes would provide air to the engine. On the Pfalz D.III, D.IIIa and the D.XII had external scoops on the bottom forward fuselage and a aluminum sheet tubes that rammed air into the crankcase through the holes cast in the lower crankcase.
