Albatros rudder lozenge fabric?

Dear folks!

A friend of mine is modeling a figure of a victorious British pilot with a roundish Albatros rudder (ie. D.II OAW or D.V/Va) on his hands He wants to paint lozenge colours on the rudder and is now wondering:

1. How was the fabric attached on the rudder? Vertically, horizontally or something between? I'm afraid that the answer for the later question is 'yes'. If so, do you know, if the way of attaching it was typical to the manufacturer? (at least on D.III OAW rudders it was horizontally, wasn't it?)

2. Was the rudder covered with two different pieces of fabric, or was the same piece bended over the edge to cover the other side too?

Yours Mikko

The fabric pieces were in two pieces. Left and right side were attached on three edges (inside out) and The the fabric envelope was pulled through so the outer surfaces were now exposed. This was then slipped over the framework and the final edge hand sewn closed. This was then doped and varnished or painted. This was often the area over the vertical spine or pivot bar that was nestled against the rudder fin.

Two pieces. Yes the lozenge layout seems to have the same lay out as the types that were applied to the fuselage on Fokker aircraft.
