Hauptmann Martin Fiebig CO of Bogohl IX ????

Hi,

I found info that this man became CO of Bogohl 9 on the 2nd of August 1918. Is this a typo or was the unit indeed brought into existence ?
Never heard of it before...

Thanks and best from Johan

I also have a note that he was assigned as BG 9 C.O. on 2Aug18 (probably got the information from you). However, I have the further note that this unit was never formed. Perhaps it was in the Luftstreikräfte planning stage? FWIW. R.

Rick,

I did just very recently get this info, so it didn't come from me. I have heard rumours about a 9th before, but never seen anything about it.

Dan-San,

As far as I know you're indeed correct, this is the first time I've ever seen anyone who sould be with the non existing unit...

Thanks !

Best from Johan

Hi Johann & Rick & Dan,

Martin Fiebig
*07.05.1891 Rösnitz / Oberschlesien
+ 24.10.1947 Belgrad (hingerichtet)

since 1.3.1943 General der Flieger

till 1.8.1918 Pilot and Staffelführer im Bogohl 3
02.08.1918 - 02.1919 CO Bogohl 9

this infos came from the Hildebrand Book "Generale der Luftwaffe" Vol.1
A-G.
If its a typo or not, could only be checked in Bundesarchiv-Freiburg, in his P-File.

Hello

According to official German sources a decision was taken during the summer of 1918 to form BG 9 by splitting up BG 3...however this was not done before the EOW because of the War situation..

As for Hildebrandts books which now are available on the net, they basically have very good information regarding those flyers who served within the German Air Force during the Great War. But in some cases they have wrong information, probably because the information was "collected" during WW2 or after that...

For Fiebig the information are rather vague but he could not have been commander of a unit which never existed.. ... However he could have been "nominated" for that job...

I actually have him being the commander of BG 3 at the end of the War....

Hi,

Thank you very much Hal and Gunnar ! So there seems to be something real about this 'ghost' unit that I'd heard of in the past.

Gunnar, have you any idea when he did become CO of BG3 in that case ?

Thanks and best from Johan

Hello again Johan

I actually dont have more information then mentioned earlier, and in this case with Fiebig it is not an original source which makes it a bit unsure...

I also dont knew if/when Brandenburg left the command of BG 3, but it definitely dont fits with my notes that Fiebig took over the command in early Aug 1918...

As mentioned earlier a lot of times, it is very difficult to find decent service records of German flyers, even of those who were very famous...
