Hi all,

I'm new to your aerodrome, but surely you have realized that already. I'm not really a real WWI plane fan, I just come because I'm working in a profile of a Dorand Ar.1 and I'm not sure the length I have found for the plane ( 9,15 mts ) is accurate. Would appreciate very much the exact length of both AR.1 and AR.2.

And I'm not even interested in a WWI Dorand but in one of these that was sold to the Riffian leader Abd-el-Krim in 1924. Any detail on that most welcome too, if any. Specially which was the usual color pattern in the French and American planes.

I have seen a recce pic of the plane I mention at Morocco and it shows "white" tail and upper wings. I guess it's a short of "sand" color... But would bet it retained the color scheme of the Air Force from whose surplus it was sold. That can be only the French unless the AEF planes were left behind at France as I know the plane was purchased at France.

I have made the usual standard web search with google, etc. looking for pics and side drawings but I must admit I have nothing really solid to work with. Can anybody point me to webs dealing with that plane or even books, magazines, etc.. ?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome Artamendi!

The AR.1 was covered quite extensively on this forum back in July of this year (last posting was on July 27). Look on page 12 of the 'Aircraft' category, topic: 'Technical Data Needed: Dorand AR.1'. There is much info there on these aircraft.

regards

Great!

I made a search by Dorand and AR.1 in the posts, but seemingly I'm not a good "searcher" still...

I'll give a look to those posts... and many thanks

atamendi,

Just go to the blue '12' at the top of the 'aircraft', page, 'click' on it , and scan for Dorand. R.

Hi all and many thanks to all who answered.

Finally I had a minute to look that back thread at page 12. Sadly, now I have three figures for the lenght of the Ar.1 : 9.13, 9.14 and 9.30 mts... ???

Any idea about which should be the exact or more accurate ?. I have no real knowledge of the reliability of the sources mentioned for each figure...

Again many thanks.

According to a German 3 view drawing done from a captured example, the overall length was 9.150m measured from the front of the prop boss to the trailing edge of the rudder. A copy of this drawing (among many others) is on my CD available at http://members.rogers.com/ww1aircraftdrawings/

As ever when dealing with dimensions of WW1 aircraft, considerable variation existed between individual examples so that 9.13 and 9.14 could also be perfectly correct for those particular examples being measured. The 9.3m seems a bit too high given the closeness of the other 3, and may have been an estimate or written down wrong or the distance measured tail down rather than parallel to the line of flight.

Surfing the web under Curtiss, I found enigmatic "Box 94". Peeked, and found Dorand. Seems like an index to holdings of magazines etc in the G H Williams library in Dallas TX.
See www.utdallas/library/special/aviation/ww1g4.html
Lotsa luck. Or ask Dan san to have a look for you.
