RFC Fabric Patching Practices?

Having 3/4 finished Ball's A.213 Nie.17 in 1/32, I recently read that Ball had a rep for getting in close, and as a result, routinely took a lotta Hun lead. If true, a perfect excuse for something I've never tried before; namely, simulating patched bullet holes.
1) Were patches square, and ready cut, or cut to fit?
2) Would they have been clear doped fabric anywhere they were applied, or would an attempt have been made to maintain camouflage (i.e., colored on uppers, clear on lowers)? I tried to replicate French Khaki on my model, and assume that if colored on the uppersurfaces, the patches would have been PC10 (not at all at odds with the effect I'd like to achieve).
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Rob
