Gazette Awards to NCOs and Other Ranks

I received this book Friday. Its full title is "Gazetted Awards to N.C.O.s and other Ranks of the Aerial Forces 1914-1924". The author is Bernard Austerberry, and it was published in 1999 by Jade. The ISBN is 0-9518098-6-5. It is soft cover, printed landscape, roughly trade paperback size, with xviii+458. There is a small number of photos in the center, mostly medal groups, recipients, aircraft, and pictures of name impressions on the back or the edge of several medals. It is noted as limited to 300 copies. I found it at www.bmjbookshop.com. The price was 35 pounds, with 10.50 pounds shipping to the USA.

Sources used are the London Gazette, and the Air Ministry Mentions (noted as The Times B releases, for Mentioned in Dispatches). A typical entry is
ARNOT WM Rank: F/Sgt No: 12069, Ref MD [Mention in Dispatches), Srce: L.Gaz. p205, 4 Jan, 1917. Noted as Second Lieutenant (Technical) in the 1918 RAF List.

It would appear that full names are only given when they appear in the Gazette, otherwise it is initials only.

Frank.

Mike,
I was on the NA/PRO website, looking at the new releases, and their other announcements. One of these as I remember was for an online pamphlet, with a title like "Looking for your Ancestors in WW1 Aviation records", and I found it in the bibliography.

I assume you know about the book "Fringes of the Fleet" (*not* Kipling), with the DSCs awarded to RNAS and small craft (minesweepers, etc.) crew? That one I found wandering the library shelves at the PRO (along with a book on all Fleet Air Arm awards in WW2; both were still available a few years ago).

Frank.

had a look for Fringes of the Fleet a couple of weeks ago, but not there I'm afraid. Should have asked I suppose!.

Just searched the PRO book shop and Fringes of the Fleet doesn't register.

Then serched Abebooks, 64 hits, all Kipling!, and Addall.com, all Kipling plus one copy by Edward Elgar which turned out to be the Kipling stuff set to music.

I expect a copy will turn up sooner or later.

Mike,
R C Witte: Fringes of the Fleet and the Distinguished Service Cross. Published 1997, Dix Noonan Webb Ltd. I bought it in 2000; according to the invoice their website is www.dnw.co.uk and their email address is auctions@dnw.co.uk. If that doesn't work, I can try contacting the author, who lives in Cincinnati.

Frank.
