As a follow up.....

Is there much difference between the Sopwith Schnieder and the Sopwith Baby? I could build the Special Hobby "Schnieder" as a "Baby".....

Again, showing my lack of knowledge....

Hi John -

There seems to be a bit of this going around . . . . . . check this thread from last week.

Basically, to go from Schnieder to Baby you'll need to change the cowl and fin/rudder and add ailerons. Not really a big deal, all in all.

Hmmmm that had me thinking that with some plastic sheet and a left over cowl (& rotary too perhaps) from a Nieuport you could pull it off...

Just an idea...

Yes Eric....

I have a Tabloid "in the works". Actually, a better term would be "in the box"

It's a 17" span (not sure why I chose that size, that's how long ago I started it) rubber FF version, based on plans by Kingsley Kau.

All this Sopwith talk has got me thinking about it again. Maybe it's time to dust it off and add some more wood.

The Tabloid is on my to-do (someday) list, too - probably the side-by-side two seat version. Two questions:

John - how do you plan on doing that cowl?

Everyone - I've seen some contemporary drawings (maybe Flugsport?) of Schnieder / Tabloid types clearly identified as Sopwiths with a full-flying rudder, no fin, similar to an early Nieuport or Morane-Saulnier. I've never seen a photograph of a Sopwith Tabloid / Schneider / Baby with this setup. It looks a little goofy, to be honest, and I'm wondering if anyone has an explanation. Were some early Sopwiths built with that rudder, or was it a mistake in the drawings?

Well...I hadn't gotten that far yet, but I imagine it will be carved from light balsa or foam. I'll paint it 'aluminum' color, then spin some burnishing swirls onto it with an electric drawing eraser....

At least that's the plan.

Actually, my biggest problem with the Tabloid is how to balance and trim the plane so those front skids don't snap off everytime it hits the ground. Maybe make them from 1/16" sheet foam......
