Shuttleworth Camel Crank Shaft

I am just experimenting with digital picture uploading. If this goes well, you should see a couple of pictures of the crank from the Clerget that will power the Sopwith Camel that Northern Aeroplane Workshops are currently building.

Try again...

The files seem to be uploading when I use the "Manage Attachments" thing... Any suggestions?

They have to be smaller than 39kb which is very small.

And they have to be an acceptable format, i.e. bmp, doc, gif, jpe, jpeg, jpg, pdf, png, psd, txt, or zip. So no tiffs!

Have you got a url for the Northern Aeroplane Workshops? I was looking today and couldn't find them.

Thanks for the information, the software that came with the camera allows me to resize the pictures, so here goes:

Hi Mike,
I will find out the situation with the web page, which was quite out of date when I last saw it. I will post some new pictures here.

William,
I will contact you soon with some news.

I am delivering the crank to Shuttleworth today, and will take my camera along.

Robert

Old Warden Yesterday

The Sopwith Pup is currently in the engineering workshop, disassembled and with the fabric removed. Unfortunately, I am still learning to use the camera, and my pictures are rubbish. I will be there again in a couple of weeks and will try again. If anybody wants a close up of a specific area of the air frame, please let me know.

Regards,

Robert

Mike,
The old web pages can be viewed via this link. The Camel pictures in the "Construction Gallery" are around 2-3 years old, and the wing shown is actually a non-airworthy practice wing that was made in 1974, before the Sopwith Triplane.

I will take some new photos tomorrow, and post them here.

Thanks for posting the pics Mirrors! I have been searching for information on the camel project for some time now. I thought I might have to have a day out at the museum to see for myself how far NAW have got!

The DH2 sounds exciting I hope they can pull that one off as Shuttleworth badly needs a 'pusher' in its collection! ( along with a Be2,Re8......!)

The first picture is the upper port main plane, complete.

The second picture is the upper starboard Main Plane, being assembled. Fittings for the centre section, and the rear engine plate, appear in the foreground.

The third picture shows the cross bracing of the rear fuselage, from under the empennage. I hoped this would show the tanks, but they are not really clear.

The final picture shows Trevor and Ian in front of the port diagonal strut. We did have the crank shaft, engine plates, the machine guns and more of the controls fitted, but the front end has been stripped down to enable the crank shaft to be returned to Old Warden.

Yeoman, the museum is open 7 days a week, but direct access to our workshop is generally limited to Tuesday evenings or Sunday mornings. Please let me know if you plan to visit at another time, and I will try to meet you there. This invite is extended to any other forum member who would like to see the Camel.

Does anyone have details or drawings for a Cooper bomb rack?

Robert

Robert,

thanks for the link, I don't understand why it doesn't come up in a search.

I discovered Old Warden in 1966 when I stumbled across a flying day when out for a bike ride (used to live in Bedfordshire and went to senior school at Biggleswade). It's a telling statement that I saw my first flying Pup, SE5, Bristol Fighter, and English Electric Lightning on that day.

And which of those four will never be seen in the air again?
