Dario,

the man on the right, who looks directly into the camera is without doubt Staffelführer Ernst Udet. The tall man standing behind him could be Lt. Joachim von Winterfeld. But that's only a guess...

Dario,

According to Greg VanWyngarden in "von Ricthofen's Flying Circus" (Albatros Productions) the photo was taken at Bernes in August 1918.

Notice one of Udet's Fokker D.VII "Lo" . This one belived to be built by OAW. It appears in his personal markings along with the usual Jasta 4 unit markings of black nose panels and black/white fuselage borders but it retains it's lozenge finish.

All i can say is, very interesting photo!

Probably most of Jasta 4 pilots there..too bad they are mostly with their backs to the camera.

This isn't much but maybe it helps:

JG1 moved to Bernes on 11 Aug.

Udet went on leave 22 Aug.

This taken from Bodenschatz' 'Jagd in Flanderns Himmel'

So if the picture was indeed taken at Bernes with Udet, it was taken between these two dates.

Some J4 members from this time frame:

Lt Jessen
Lt Koepsch
Lt Udet
Lt Maushake
Lt d. R. Kraut
Lt Just
Oblt Grosch
Flieger Rhode

ah yes, Immo is correct. Winterfeld should also be deployed with J4 during this time....

This just my best estimate from one source, corrections and clarifications are welcome. Perhaps it will help ID the backs of some of those fliegerheads.
One fellow looks like he is wearing an Ulhan tunic a'la MVR's old unit.

Friend Michael

Extraordinary contribution, of excellent help.
Very good their comment and the references.
The airplane that this more to the left it possesses the mark of Heinz von Gluczewski Kliwicki, and maybe the next Fok to their side is the: "das Sabbern Boxer" of Karl Meyer.
Maybe be them the two men that are to the bottom.
The Lt. Joachim von Winterfeld, was in Jasta 4 until September 5 1918, he was shot down by the Captain John Edgcombe Doyle, I believe that he is the date and its opponent, I am not sure.
Grateful of their contributions.
