I have seen references to Richthofen being issued a Fokker D.VII shortly before his death. Has anyone got confrimation of that and better yet, markings information?

Thanks,

Chris

MvR flew the experimental V11 at the First Fighter Competitions Jan.-Feb. 1918 and no others we know of. Anyone who has told you that he was issued or flew a Fok. D.VII is guessing or mistaken.

It is actually a reference in the instructions to the Roden early D.VII as well as a review of that kit. I am guessing the reviewer got that info from the kit. Too bad, taht would be fascinating to build!
I have a picture of a D.VII in overall streaky green camo with the cross patee instead of the straight crosses. I am guessing that is the V.11. Did any operational planes have that style of insignia?

Thank you for the reply,

Chris

The first Fokker D.VII to reach the front had fuselages that were streaked camouflage and 4 color loz wings. The V18 was streaked over all and is usually seen withan enlarged rudder / fin arrangement. The cross patee / iron cross was on the first arrivals. The top two images of each set of four are early Fokker Schwerin built.

For other interesting images.

So the very first D.VII's were issued to squadrons wearing the old style crosses on white fields? They would have been olive cowlings, wheels, undercariage fairing etc with 4 colour wings, streaked fuselages and the old style insignia? Interesting scheme! Are there any pictures of one? What serial number range would they be? There is an alternative 4 colour lozenge pattern that Americal/Gryphon claims is from an early build Fokker D.VII. Appropriate for one of the versions with older insignia? Is the first picture that you posted of a prototype (V.18?) or is that a very early production machine?

Sorry for all the questions, but it is an interesting alternative!

Thanks,

Chris

Hey Topgun, I'm no expert but using the Osprey book by Norman Franks & Greg VanWyngarden as the latest ref. It was his Last DVII, and was specially made with the white paint. There are 3 other color (colour) plates of his DVII's that were used previously. I've got a Revell DVII that I WAS going to do in the ALL WHITE scheme, but his other 3 mounts are more interesting. copperhead I believe the red and yellow 294? was lothar's DVII and probably been red back to where the yellow starts but that's my opinion.

My understanding is that Goering's D.VII F 5125/18 was specially built for him and was painted that way from new. It was his last D.VII and was a late production Fokker built machine with a BMW engine. Nice, but not apllicable to very early schemes!

Here is a link to an older site that discussed the Fokker D.VII Heres the link without the pop-ups. http://www.aerofile.info/

Chris Crowx try the search engine at the bottom of the page, many good discussion links on the Fokker D.VII especially the early types are there.
