Dario,

Iron Cross 2nd class with Hanseatic cross (Hamburg version) The other Iron Cross is a 1st class. Red color is because of background or may be rust? But I would think it is only the background color?

I hope this helps?

Dario,

The Hanseatic Crosses were awarded from three German cities that were city states and members of the old Hanseatic League. These were similar but with different symbols in the center of the red glazed medallion.

The Hamburg Hanseatic cross is the one awarded to Carlos Meyer. (The other cities were Bremen, and Lübeck.) The Hamburg Senate voted and approved the awards. (The other two cities had their own Senate that did likewise for their respective awards.)

Have never seen an Eiserne Kreuz colored red before. Have you seen this close up? Is it enamelled red, or, as Galloway asked, is it rusty?

Dario,

The Eiserne Kreuz that is labelled 1. is a 2nd Class. It was worn with a ribbon. When not worn on the Ordenschnal (order bar) it was indicated by wearing the ribbon through the button hole on the tunic. The cross labelled 5. (the red looking one) would then be then the 1st Class Eiserne Kreuz which was a pin back award.

Friends Galloway and Cigogne
Thank you for their answers.
I didn't know accurately identify those medals.
I show off, as you that the red color cross be background color.
I had Not the opportunity to see them personally, but once he makes it will verify their state.
Karl Meyer receives award of the Eiserne Kreuz, First and Second class, and the Hanseaten Kreuz. (he lived in the city of Hamburg).
According investigate, received both Eiserne Kreuz in the German Aviation, and the Hanseaten Kreuz for their performance in the oriental front in 1915, (Maybe with the Dragons Nr.9 or with the Cuirassiers Nr.8) and that same year it is ascended Lieutenant of Reserve.
Can somebody say where the Dragons acted 9 and Cuirassiers 8 in 1915? Does somebody know in Battles he could have had the merit to receive the Hanseaten Kreuz?
Very grateful for their answers.
Thanks to all.
Dario

Dario,

Kürassier-Regiment Nr.8 saw action on the western front during 1915.

But Dragoner-Regiment Nr.9 was indeed fighting at the eastern front in 1915.

This Regiment saw action near Lodz, Borzymie and at the river Mogra - near Rawka, Pelica and at the river Rylsk - In northern Poland and Eastern Prussia, near Memel, Tilsit , in Kurland, near Mitau and on the river Wenta, near Schaulen, and at the river Njemenek, near Opatschna and Roweta and finally at the river Düna. On 18 Feb 1916 the Regiment moved to Silesia.

Do you have any dates for Meyers service with the Cavalry ?

Hi Dario,

thanks for the interesting photos and the service record for Carlos time with the cavalry.

When the war broke out, " Kgl. Preuß. Dragoner-Regiment König Carl I. von Rumänien(1.Hannoversches) Nr.9 (that's the full name ) was part of 6.Kavallerie-Division. The Regiment was stationed in Metz. This Division belonged to a group of Cavalry-Divisions which were commanded by the so called "Höherer Kavalleriekommandeur Nr.4" (Higher Cavalry-Commander). This Cavalry-Corps wasn't attached to an german Army, it was under the direct order of the German High Command. At the biginning of the war it saw action on the western front in the Lorraine area and later in the 6.Army area around Arras, but was transfered to the eastern front in November 1914. There it belonged to "Höherer Kavalleriekommandeur Nr.1" and was part of the german 9. Army, commanded by General der Kavallerie von Mackensen.

Regarding the colours of the uniform: I don't know for sure but I think that the uniform was coloured light blue. The cap was light blue too with a white strip, the trousers were black and blue.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Immo
