While searching Hobby Lobby for carpet thread to rig my 1/39 Wright Flyer, I happened upon something FAR SUPERIOR: "SULKY 40 942 1219" two-strand silk thread. I'm sure it would look great on 1/32, 1/28, and maybe even 1/24 kites. It's the right color, dark silver (has a sorta purplish cast on the spool) which further darkens to steel when coated with thin CA, constant diameter, & (up close) looks like cable. It's got built-in stretch (I swear, the "wobble" in the kite's wings disappeared when the rigging was done),and doesn't require coloring. I was never a fan of guitar string (all that to the micro-meter measuring) and stretched sprue (while workable) is a bear to produce any two strands the same diameter. "Sulky" is also very recognizable in the store: the spool is a very unusual 3/4" diameter and a 2 3/16" length. Regards, Rob

Yup, just laid it up against Ed's Camel, Pfalz, and Albatros kit parts, and SULKY (put that in a Google search) appears (IMHO) fine enough for 1/48 kits, as well. Regards, Rob

Stephen (et al), Afraid my enthusiasm got the better of me. While SULKY's diameter is pretty good for 1/48, having looked through photos in
Osprey's Classic Aircraft of World War One, the "cable" texture is probably too pronounced for any scale smaller than 1/32. My apologies, Rob

Hey Rob! I'm deffinately checking out the Sulky! Your description has me hoping. If you'll look at the Nieu. 28; it has a double rigged set of strands on the wings, from the interplane struts to the feuselage. The PE turnbuckles place the wires about 1/16 inch apart (maybe less), and on top of that, the plane I'm doing seems to have either a canvas covering over them, or some other material to act as a fairing. I'll have to try to get some SULKY and experiment before I get there. JW

Jay Dub-Yah, I think you'll be pleased. Even in 1/39 scale the "cable" texture is almost too pronounced, but it is still much finer than the "hawser" supplied in the Flyer kit, and it has no fuzz. It comes in light silver-grey, dark silver-grey and black. For me, the constant diameter, color, slight stretch, and price make it a winner. Glueck auf, Rob
