Genet deserted from the US Navy so that he could get into the War. He enlisted in the Foreign Legion and the then transferred to the Lafayette Escadrille. He was wounded in the face during the combat in which James McConnell, an original member of the Lafayette was shot down and killed. On April 16, 1917, Genet was on patrol with Lufbery and they became separated. The squadron was notified that he had crashed within the French lines. It was thought that he was killed or made unconscious by a German shell. Genet was the first American to be killed after the US had declared war on Germany. He was buried in a military cemetery at Ham. I believe that he was later interred at the Lafayette Memorial outside Paris. I think that he was credited with one German plane forced to land behind French lines, so that he cannot be considered an ace. He was nonetheless a very brave and altruistic young man, as were most of the men who fought at that time.
