I had grown lazy about backing up my work. So when one of my computers died on 30 December, I was confronted with records in different states of array. RCAF Honours and Awards data base (including revisions not on Air Force Association website) had been backed up in September (roughly 80 new pages since then may be lost). A project on air DSO awards was backed up at the end of October; one on awards to RAF and Commonwealth personnel between the wars backed up at mid-December; much routine correspondence not backed up at all.
MORAL: DO NOT TAKE YOUR RECORDS FOR GRANTED. BACK THINGS UP REGULARLY - on discs, on other computers. BACK UP ! BACK UP ! BACK UP ! The machine itself is now in a repair shop where experts are trying to determine if the files as they existed on 30 December can be retrieved. The prognosis is not good. BACK UP ! |
