I realised I have no pre-war professions for both German aces. I assume Frankl was a civil pilot but I have no idea about Kirschstein. Maybe a student? Any hints?

I assume that Kirschstein was still a pupil or at least finished school when the war break out. He was just 18 years old in August 1914. According to Roneingh: "Zwei Generationen Luftwaffe" his father was Regierungspräsident von Posen and Kirschstein entered as a Kriegsfreiwilliger 3. Pionier-Bataillon "von Rauch" in Spandau. Did you check Hanns Möllers opus magnum about the PLM-holders. Perhaps there are are more infos to find ???

Wenn man den Beruf seines Vaters in Betracht zieht, scheint es wahrscheinlich, daß er sich vor dem Heereseintritt noch immatrikulierte. Wilde Spekulation...

Gruß, Immo

Frankl seems to have been the son of a Jewish salesman and got his pilot's certificate on the 20th july 1913. I have another source saying it was 20th august 1913, license no 490. The Kaserne of Fighter Squadron 74 in Neuburg is named after him.
Found unfortunately nothing on the pre war activity of Kirschstein.

Thanks.
Imm, I have only some copied pages of Möller not referring to Kirschstein. Zuerl, Roeingh (sp?) etc. are not specific in this matter. I guess I will label him "Schüler" if I can´t get more info.
