Another wild deflection shot here. Any of you folks have activity records for March 1916 German vs. Russian? I'm trying to identify the German recipient of a watch presented for an aerial victory on 15/3/16 in Russia.
Thanks,
William

Hi William

The German only brought down two a/c on the Russian front this month(both in aerial combat)...a further two was brought down on the Macedonian front in aerial combat.

Officially one of the two "Russian" a/c was brought down within the 8th German Army(baltic area). The other was brought down within A.A.(Army Group) Scholtz.

My notes from the HB(Heeresbericht) only have notes of one of these two victories on the Russian front....
..On 1 March 1916 was a Russian 2-s shot down NW Mitau within German hold lines. The crew was taken POWs.
I dont have any map at moment, but I think that this was the victory within 8 Army...?

However Mosen mentioned in a earlier thread that also an Russian Ballon was shot down early this month.....

Unfortunate I dont have any names, but Frank Olynyk or someone else probably have...?

Could the date 15 March 1916 be the date for receiving the Ehrenbecher..?

???

Gunnar,
Thanks for the reply. There is certainly no evidence here that this could not be the presentation date. I'll include the original inscription text as my translation skills are poor.
"MIT LIEBE UND GLUCKWUENSCHEN ZU DEINEM ERSTEN NAHKAMPFSIEG IN RUSSLAND VON VATER UND MUTTER 15.3.1916"
Perhaps if your German is good there may be some subtle hint from syntax/structure that would infer the significance of the date.
Regards,
William

Hi again William

Unfortunate neither German or English is my home language.. :-[

But reading the German text does NOT indicate any aerial victor or combat...the text also dont specify the "victory" with "am" which indicates that the most possible solution is
a day for award/presentation or some other reason...

Probably someone with better German language knowledge can correct me here..!

???

"With love and congratulation to your first close combat victory. Father and mother. 15/03/1916".
No chance to find out wether the date refers to the event or not.

Sorry, can't help.

Mosen,

* * In no way whatsoever do I claim to be an expert on the German language, nor can I even read it for that matter (except for the obvious dates, places, names, aircraft types, etc.), but in my mind when I first read the original message posted in German, it just seemed to me that the date was the date Mom and Dad gave him the watch, and it was not the date of the combat. * Just a poor non-German reader's opinion, for what it is worth. *(Just padding, Vin)!! * * *

* * *I suppose to only further complicate the matter, when trying to find the Russian "victim", we must also account for the Gregorian vs. Julien calendars current for both sides at the time!! * * * * * *R.

* * Yeah, where the heck is spell checker when you need it!!
