I have two sources, one of them dubious, that seem to be refering to new airmen when using the term 'hun.' Has anyone seen anything similar? If so, does anyone know what the origin of this colloquialism is?

I have heard at least one interview with an ex-TFC pilot who stated that trainee airmen, learning to fly, were called "huns" because they destroyed more aircraft than the actual Germans. I'm sure other forumites can addmore.

In "Up and at 'Em" Harold Hartney wrote that "Huns" was "the official nickname" of student pilots. He doesn't say why.

Our intrepid birdman escaped the real and extremely lethal Huns by going on Home Establishment.Back in good old Blighty he wiled away the days teaching sprogs to fly.The ability of said sprogs to wreck aircraft, killing both themselves and the grizzled veteran aboard with them was staggering.
This led the lucky survivors to conclude it was much safer tangling with a bunch of greentails. In recognition of their deadly skills sprogs were christened Huns.

Could it be that one of them was referred to as "Hans" but the older and more experianced pilots, being somewhat deafened by the noise of the clackety old engines, mistook it for "Huns" ?

And then, much as our Scots do with their saying .."See youz Jimmy !", gave all new arrivals the same name ?

"Huns" was a widespread nickname for all German soldiers in WW I. It declines on a speech of the German Emperor Wilhelm II. Wilhelm had used the term "huns" to describe the consequences of a threating war. This speech was provoking very much, however, and encouraged the official Allies to use this term propaganditically against the German soldiers.

I resent this. Besides, it was not the British or the French who fought back the Hun in the Sun it was Theoderrich the Lombard.
