I am having difficulty identifying this German Airplane. *I acquired the photo years ago and never gave any thought to the type of plane this was. *
In the picture you can see a car in the upper left corner. *The ring around the downed plane looks to be people who came out to see the airplane. *
Any help you can give will be appreciated. *If you can help I email you a higher quality scan of this picture. This is a zoomed in section to help you identify the plane.
Thanks for your help.

On a 300% blowup it looks like one of the early Fokker D types, DI-DIII. Both wings appear equal in span and cord with sharply raked tips.

Peter,
Thanks for your help in identifying these airplanes for me. *I've put the high resolution photographs of both the downed german DIII and the French Nieuport 17 photos on my website. *The files are too large to email. *The website is www.slifker.net/airplanes
If you have any trouble downloading these, please email me at glenn@slifker.net.
Thanks again,
Glenn

Delighted to be of assistance and thanks for the link. Incidentally, "Airplane.jpg" is Hiram Maxim's flyer.

Why didn't I think to ask you about the Hiram Maxim's flyer? I'll update my records. Thanks again.

Glennlifsker:
* *The downed German aircraft is a Rumpler C.IV,C.V, C.VI or C.VII. These machines are identical and differ only in engines in interior details. It ia most likely a Ru.C.IV.
One of the clues is the the plan form and three color camouflage pattern on the tailplane and upper wing.

No argument from me; Dan San is the master. It appears he also has better eyesight than me

Whenever I click on your link I get an error message. Is it just me?

*I see what your talking about with the three color camouflage patterns. *You need to be part historian, part researcher, and a lot of smarts to figure out something like this. *
I know the photo is of poor quality and the sun is throwing long shadows, but the tailplane section looks not to be rounded on the back end. *It looks more like a Halberstadt tail but the markings are more like a Rumpler and the wings like the Fokker DIII. *
I tried blowing up and increasing the quality of the plane to help in identifying the plane. *
Thanks again,
Glenn Slifker
