Can anyone tell me what aircraft might have been used by the British in Africa? Where might the airplanes have been based?

No 26 Sqn RFC/RAF used BE2c, BE2e and Farman aircraft. The squadron arrived in Mombasa on 31 January 1916 and moved to Mbuyini the following day. Bases after that were:

Taveta - from 23 March 1916
Mbuyini - from 28 March 1916
Kahe - from 22 May 1916
Marago Opuni - from 27 May 1916
Old Lassiti - from 29 May 1916
Kwa Lokua - from 2 June 1916
Mbagui - from 18 June 1916
Dakawa - from 18 August 1916
Morogoro - from 31 August 1916
Tulo - from 5 October 1916
Kilwa - from 19 December 1916
Songea - from 16 March 1917
Likuju - from 16 May 1917
Mtua - from 13 October 1917
Dar-es-Salaam - from sometime in January 1918.

The squadron packed up and left for the UK via South Africa on 8 February 1918, arriving back at Blandford on 8 July 1918 and disbanding that same day.

HMS Himalaya operated down Zanzibar way and had some Short 827s on board.

The navy had a number of aircraft operating in support of ships hunting the Konigsberg.

Thanks for your speedy and detailed replies. Through the links on this site I've been able to even find photos of the 'planes you mentioned.
I've been re-reading P.C. Wren and Talbot Mundy lately and was getting re-interested in the Great War period -- particularly Africa. When I was a boy I bought and built all the Aurora WWI airplane kits. I wish I still had them today. This site has helped me relive some of that early obsession and romance. Any suggestions on books about the African campaign (other than T.E. Lawrence)? Thanks again.

My Reminiscences of East Africa by General Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck is a great source from the man who led the German force for the whole campaign.
No aviation content but a wonderful view from the German perspective.

A very good overview is provided by "The Great War
in Africa", by Byron Farwell. First published in
1989, it's available through Amazon.com and (I'm
sure) many other sources.
