Greetings,
As today is my birthday, I must raise my glass to 3 brave men with whom I share this day..
Antoine Laplasse, Gordon Budd Irving, and Adolf Ritter von Tutschek..
I must admit that I knew nothing of the first two before I came to this website a year and a half ago, but after finding out that we shared the same birthday, it has been fun trying to find out more information about them. Unfortunately, all 3 were to perish in the Great War...
Laplasse died doing what Balloon-Busters do...
Irving leading his Flight against several Aces of Jasta 10 and Jasta 37...
and von Tutschek was downed by eventual Ace Herb Redler and Ace Bernard Beanlands...
Cheers!!!
Scotty

Ref. Ritter von Tutschek, there's a REAL aggravating story about his personal effects & souvenirs. I believe it was related to me at the OTF conference in Arizona a few years ago (maybe by Peter Grosz.) Anyway, vT's sister adored him and kept everything; turned one room of her apartment into a virtual shrine with medals, uniforms, trophies (fabric serial numbers, Lewis Guns, etc). Then came War Two. The building survived the bombing (don't recall the city) but some displaced relatives moved in afterward--and threw everything out to make more room.
Now THAT is a war crime.
