May 7 1918 was the aniversary of the "Two on Twenty" with Atkey/Gass & Gurdon/Thompson. Watch for May 9 1918 when Atkey/Gass again attack a large formation on the way to 29 victories for the month of May. Did any other pilot score as many victories in one month? Don't think so.
Careful Mr Atkey, the german record police are in full form on the forum.
Latest they have your dad at 0 victories.
I don't care if any of the 8 huns they got credit for 82 years ago really crashed, it took 4 very cool hands to take on 20 enemy a/c and live to tell the tale.
Let's see. The British, French, and Americans greatly outnumber their opposite number by how many?
Yet, it always some Allied aviator that takes on anywhere from twenty to one to sixty to one. And, in the frey brings down multiple of the enemy. Do I have that right?
4 men lied completely about events just to make a good story.
Oh and if the 60 to 1 comment is about Barker, that's a comment made the a no good lying Canadian General backed up by 1000's of pogo's in the trench. Though it was more like 24-32ish to one...in a series of exchanges.
Perhaps I should have stated my point differenty. Why does one never hear of one German or Austrian plane being involved with multiple enemies? With the ratio of Allied to Central Powers aircraft one would think that was likely to be a more prevelant situation.
Well the germans wisely flew in large groups(jasta strength).
Now Voss had a good go..but no way to escape and had the dice rolled a different way, we could be lamenting the loss of several aces of 56 sqdn.
I'm sure Hannes has many outrageous stories(and true!) about German exploits...and he has posted them and I for one have thoroughly enjoyed them. No one ever picks a bone with him over it so no big long threads about their validity. Most are like me probably just assuming they are correct.
I think it is in the appendix of Above the Trenches or one of Franks books that list the most victories in a given month. Therefore my reference to most in a month. I cannot find any evidence that he had any victories in July and very few in June.
