Hi Gentlemen,
I was about to respond to this query , then I checked out Rod's previous reply and was a bit surprised at what I found. Tony, the paintings to which you refer were all done as box art for a series of excellent 1/48 scale models produced by DML Models from Hong Kong (aka Dragon Models, but know as DML in the US because some other model firm has the 'dragon' name copyrighted) several years ago. The box art showing Rickenbacker, MvR, Udet, and incidentally, Hans Goerth of Marine Feld Jasta 3 and his Fokker E.V, were done for 'special editions' of the models which also contained a beautiful 1/12 scale bust of the pilot depicted. These models are, I believe, all out of production now, but I believe you could find out more about DML/Dragon Models by contacting the fellows on the World War I Modelers Page, at:

These were all very fine paintings done by some Hong Kong-based artist, but in some some cases their research department went wrong: MvR's Dr.I 425/17 is shown flying over some British naval base with a Felixstowe F.2A at rest (Manfred must have really gotten lost) and Capt. Eddie's SPAD is shown overflying some WWI-era battleship of some kind. Another piece in the series had a Jasta 6 Fokker E.V dogfighting a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter ! The Jacobs Triplane painting you mention is among these DML box art pieces, but it does not feature a portrait of Jacobs as no bust was ever offered.
Having visited the website that Rod described in the previous posting, I was surprised to find examples of many fine pieces of WWI aviation art, from such masters as Jim Dietz, Michael Turner,Richard Groh, John Amendola's box art from the Glencoe 1/48 kits, Don Greer's cover art from some of the Squadron/Signal publications, and a good many of our own friend Mike O'Neal's works - lifted, I suspect, from the 'Over the Front' website. The webmaster makes a disclaimer at the end and says any artist that wishes may have his art removed. Mike, did you know your art was being featured on this site - with no credit, as far as I could see ?
Anyway, that's the story behind the artwork.
Greg
