I am flying to LA from Chicago via a Cessna, leaving this weekend. Can anyone recommend any intersting WW1 museums along the way. My only plan so far is to stop by the Champlin musuem in Arizona. All advise would be greatly appreciated.
I will be in California all week, so if there are any good places around there please let me know.
Champlin is definatly the one to hit. I was just there 3 weeks ago. The San Diego Aerospace Museum has an original Neiuport 28 & SPAD VII, & several Repo aircraft. Planes Of Fame Air Museum in Chino (Corona/Riverside area) has Charles Nungesser's (sic spelling)original Hanriot HD1 aircraft, a repo Bristol Fighter, & the largest collection of WWII Japanese aircraft under one roof including the only all original flying "Zero". The claim is that there is more "warbird" activity at Chino airport than anyplace else in the world. Several warbird restoration facilities and the Yankee Airforce Museum too.
There is the Santa Monica Museum Of Flight in the LA area too. It has been a long time since I have been there, but they had The City Of Chicago (or Boston.......one of the 1920s round the world bi-planes) when I was there several years ago.
Hi Rich-
Did you get my e-mail of 4-18? I'm tied up on Monday the but am free thereafter. The Wentworth-Aranga workshop is at Paso Robles Airport and you'll be most welcome. It's 200 mi north of L.A. Chino Airport is just a few miles from here. I should be able to set up ground transportation for you in the San Diego area for your trip to the Air Museum. Probable meeting place would be Gillispie Field in E. San Diego. There is a most interesting restaurant, "The Nieuport 17", not far from here, in Orange County that you should see while visiting; I'd be pleased to have you as my guest there one evening.
If you didn't get the e-mail from me please advise and I'll get another one off with phone # etc. VBR...Lee
