Daniel,

the Red Eagle Order has itīs root in the Ordre de la Sincerite, founded in 1705 by Prinz Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Bayreuth. Revitalized and reorganized by his son, Markgraf Georg Friedrich Carl, and renamed the Order of the Brandenburgian Red Eagle (in 1734). Became Prussias second highest order in 1992, when Brandenburg-Ansbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth came udner Prussian control.

In 1914 there were six classes: Grand Cross (highest class), 1st Class, 2nd Class with Cross, 2nd Class, 3rd Class and 4th Class.the orders medal showed a red eagle spreading his wings, wearing a golden crown, The motto of the order was Sincere et Constanter (Integrity and Perseverance).

The Red Eagle Order was one of the rarer prussian orders. Noteworthy award winners in the aviation field were W. v. EBERHARD (first Inspekteru der Fleigertruppen) and E. v. Hoeppner (his successor), who both received the REO, 2nd class with Swords and Oakleaf, Prinz Friedrich Carl von Preussen, the commander of FlAbt (A) 258, who was shot down March 21, 1917, captured (by the Australians) and DOW April 6, 1917 )he received the Grand Cross of the REO with Crown, as did basically all princes of Prussia), and of course MvR, who was the only aviator to receive REO 3rd Class with Crown and Swords on April 6, 1918 (the last award he received, AFAIK).

Most of this information from Neal OīConnors "Aviation Awards of Imperial germany in WW I" vol II (Kingdom of Prussia)
