On October 29, 1917 Vizefeldwebel Joseph Lautenschlager of Jasta 11 was shot down and killed by another Vizefeldwebel pilot of another Jasta. This German pilot was to have been court-martialled, but Manfred von Richthofen intervened on the pilots behalf and rather than being court-martialed he was transfered,on orders from von Richthofen,To JG 1. Does any Forumite know or can guess at this unknown German pilots name ?

On page 112 of 'The Jasta War Chronology' by Norman Franks et al.(1998, Grub Street, London; ISBN 1 898697 84 1), Vfw Josef Lautenschlager is listed as lost in Fokker Dr.I 113/17, killed in error by a German two-seater at 1045 over Houthulst Forest. Neither crewman's name is given. He was one of two Jasta losses that day; the other was Ltn Fritz Berkemeyer, shot down in flames and killed over Zandvoorde.

Hope this helps - cheers!

John.

Names I do not know but I do recall the nature of the incident if you're interested. It's described in Alex Imrie's "The Fokker Triplane", which is a good book on the subject especially if you like technical data.

Imrie writes that the pilots involved renamed nameless but other sources do have the names it appears. Apparently, the DrI pilot was flying in a sector where other German units hadn't been told that German triplanes had been deployed. The DrI pilot was shot down and the "victor" was supposed to be court-martialed. However MvR stepped in and rescued the airman by rightfully stating that the deployment of triplanes should have been made known to all German units. The pilot went free and according to Imrie, became a member of JG 1 on MvR's invitation.

Kind regards,

Reinout
