Hello!

I have 2 (silly?) questions concerning petrol barrels of WW 1:

Did they use the same ones as we do today (seize, material, look)?

Had these barrels special colours and markings?

Were there other differences between Allied and German barrels (seize, liters, etc.)?

Thanks in advance!

I would imagine they are quite the same.

I'm sure, however that the British used 55 Gallon Drums the same as the Americans.

it was around 1900 that many standards were set and not much changed afterwards.

Thank you Grey!

Have you any idea about the colours (grey, green, etc.)?

(I need the information for my 1:72 diorama of a German airfield in 1917).

Thanks again!

Can´t help you concerning the colours but I will scan and send a picture of a petrol barrel on an interesting barrow.

Colour is something I'm clueless about. Colour photography was many years away, so I've no doubt you'd need to find either someone who knows or do some digging.

Bis dann!

My Gallery
Volker:
I believe the petrol frums were grey. The Inpectorate of the Transport Troops required all equipment to be painted grey, i.e. trucks, wagons , motorcycles and aircraft(before Nov.1914).
GOD Bless America!
