Does anyone know the true cause of Harriet's fatal crash in her two-seater Bleriot monoplane? *There are different accounts as to the cause of this crash from having a passenger that was too heavy, pilot error, not being strapped in, etc. Or, does anyone know a good source for information about this crash?

Thanks,
Amy

Hi Amy:

The best published reference of which I am aware is:

Hall, Ed. Y., editor. HARRIET QUIMBY - AMERICA'S FIRST LADY OF THE AIR. Spartanburg (SC), Honoribus, 1990. 192 pp., illus., pict. covers, wraps.

I'd look in my copy and try to get you a quick answer, but we've been doing some remodeling of late, and this and many other books are in storage. Hopefully, by the end of August I'll have full access to everything again.

BTW, have you ever noticed in photographs how much Quimby looks like Diane Keaton? Now, THAT would be an interesting film project for her.

HTH. Best,

Ira

Hi Ira:

Thanks for the information! That's the info I needed. I'll try and track down that book.

Yea, you're right. DK does resemble HQ. 'Hadn't thought about that before.

Liebling

Perhaps, if you were to contact Rittm, he/she would put you directly in contact with Mlle. Quimby and she could give you a personal account of the true series of events.

Ira,
If Diane Keaton could lose about 25 years she might do for the role.

I might add that Harriet was no slouch when it came to getting attention. The outfit she's wearing in the image Amy linked to was designed by her to accent her figure, which would have been enviable by the standards of any generation.
BTW, the Postal Service issued a stamp honoring her a couple of years ago.
Go to:
http://new.usps.com/cpim/ftp/pubs/pub512.pdf
scroll down the left column and click on Harriet Quimby.
