I have an original WW1 plane emblem aproximately 1.5 - 2 ft in diameter with a black wolfs head in a circle. This also has two black crosses stamped on it. It was given to my mother by my great grandfather who had cut it out of the plane in Germany during WW1.

I do not wish to sell this item, but would like to document it for display and historical purposes. What would be its value as well?

sincerely

If the black crosses were "stamped" on it they could actually be bullet patches from when battle damage was repaired. The insignia sounds very much like that of a French unit, the Escadrille number I can't recall at the moment. Do you have any photos of the marking you could scan and send in email at low resolution? That way we could make a positive ID on it. What are the colors of the paint around the marking?

Thanks

Could this possibly be Büchner's green/white checkerboard with the werewolf's head? We know this fabric was removed from his D-VII after the armstice. There is a photo in OTF showing two American mechanics holding it.

Frogsky:
The 49th Pursuit Squadron had as a squadron insignia a black wolf's head in profile on an orange disc with a grey border. Ref. Cross & Cockade, Vol. 5 No. 2, page 144. Does this match what you have. The 49Th Pursuit Squadron was assigned to the 2cd Pursuit Group, in the American 1st Army and served with distinction.
