Tony,

I would be interested to learn if engine Mercedes 31802 appears in any of the reports. It would most likely be connected to an Albatros. If so, would you share a copy of he relevant report?

Regards
John

There are hundreds of aircraft listed, all with engine numbers so will look for this one for you

Will take some time as I taken about 100,000 photos of docs at the PRO, mainly WWII

Thanks, Tony. I appreciate the challenge you face sorting through scans and doc photos after a research trip.

I found the captured a/c logs but your engine number Mercedes 31802 not listed

Please look at nearest numbers listed below and I have a feeling that with the number range your engine is possibly a Benz?

Merc 29832 in C.1476/17
Merc 29444 in G.215/18
Merc 29487 in G.358/18
Merc 29749 in G.225/18
Merc 29786 in unmarked Gotha fuelarge
Merc 29822 in AEG
Merc 29825 in C.3291/18
Merc 29902 in AEG
Merc 29982 in AEG
Merc 29942 in G.271/18
Benz 30952 in CL.6365/18
Benz 31254 loose no a/c
Benz 31844 in unmarked DFW
Benz 32001 loose no a/c
Benz 32095 in j318/18
Merc 32204 in D.275/18
Benz 32460 in J.667/18
Benz 32467 in J.3218/18
Benz 32960 in C6710/18
Merc 32135 Iin CL807/18

Tony,

Interesting information. The 31802 that I am referring to is definitely a Mercedes D III. It's sitting in my hangar. Here's a link to some information:
http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=64717

Preliminary research shows that it was delivered to Albatros in March 1917 so probably into an Albatros D III, but no guarantee. It arrived in Canada sometime early 1918 and was on tour during the summer and fall of that year. The mystery is in where did it come from? An obsolete and damaged engine does not seem like the kind of item you would send from the front to the UK and then Canada without a good story attached. I was wondering if it arrived in the UK as a captured aircraft during the war, was later wrecked and the engine stripped and then sent here (Canada).

Regards
John

Thanks for your reply

As I trawl through the G reports in next few days I will keep looking for your engine, as you say probably from a captured a/c rather than one handed over post WWI.

Tony

Tony,

In addition to the Report on G.134, Albatros D.4422, I would be really, really interested in any other G reports of Albatros D.V / or Va aircraft. This is incredibly helpful information.
