Prior to transferring to the Air Service Ernst Wiehle had enlisted in the 1st Royal Saxon Pioneer Battalion No 12 in 1913 and received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on 16/03/15. He volunteered for service with the Battalion’s newly created ‘Mittle Minenwefer Abteilung’ (Medium Trench Mortar Detachment) No 143 and whilst with this unit he was seriously wounded as a Gefreiter on 12/07/15.

The pre war uniforms of the Saxon Artillery and Pioneer units was dark green with red facings. Perhaps in recognition of this his DVII was Dark Green as per the colour of Albatros produced machines?

Great stuff, thanks - that's a very interesting thought and would certainly be in common with a number of other pilots' personal markings.
