Safer Fuselage Fuel Tanks

I am working on an update to a late 1940s aircraft that has a fuselage fuel tank. I was concerned about damage to the welded aluminum fuel tank in an accident.
I found that there are available tanks that are designed for crashworthiness and reliable fuel flow that are made for drag racers. Maybe a little too rectangular at the top. The fittings are standard AN style. They can have open cell foam at the bottom which acts a bit like a baffle. Take a look!

Fuel cell

Fuel Safe can make any fuel cell from 1 offs to production. We had 6 made for our formula cars we built. They were about 900.00 each. CAD model it exactly as you need and get a quote. It will be a bit salty, but correct vs adapted and probably STC able.

Machinbird, you may want to explore ‘Explosafe’, a popular product several decades ago. A quick search indicates that they are still around, or at least the patents are. Basically an aluminum, open cell filler for fuel tanks that removed the possibility of fuel vapour igniting. NATO tests involved external tanks being hit with explosive 20mm rounds and no ignition. In the 1980s they stopped selling the material to other manufacturers but it appears that may have changed.

Regards,
John
