The teacher of Manfred von Richthofen

In his new biography Peter Kilduff will tell us about the teacher and mentor of Manfred von Richthofen.

"He (MvR) piloted his Staffel's two-seater from Berlin to Krefeld to be there in time to lead the honour guard at Schäfer's funeral. As his pilot, Krefft, was still on leave, Richthofe was accompanied by one of his former instructors from Wahlstatt, Hauptmann Erich von Salzmann, who at age 40 had not flown previously. The loss of a good friend was balanced by the company of a mentor." pg. 153

"His former cadet school teacher, Erich von Salzmann, hosted him often in Berlin..." pg. 177

Erich von Salzmann an instructor in Wahlstatt? A mentor? The former cadet school teacher of Manfred von Richthofen?

In 1903 Lt. Erich von Salzmann was travelling 6.000 km from from Peking to Europe on a horseback. Afterwards, promoted Oblt., he fought from 1905-1908 in Namibia, before he went back to China again. With the beginning of WWI he arrived in Germany.

Hpt. von Salzmann stated definitively that he saw Manfred von Richthofen for the first time in Spring of 1917 at Douai. See the journal "Daheim, 1918", the source of the Richthofen biographer Peter Kilduff.

Richthofen's first airplane ride? - Cairo, Egypt - Jan. 1914

This question goes out to Richthofen experts:

I am researching the activities of aviation in North Africa in late 1913 and early 1914. In December of 1913 a whole gaggle of aviators converged on the Cario, Egypt area for various reasons.

One of these pilots was a Frenchman named Olivier, who at this time was flying a Farman biplane. His main purpose seems to have been to fly tourists around the pyramids.

In the years leading up to the Great War, Cairo developed quite a social season during the winter months for Europe's upper classes.

In a Cairo newspaper from January 5, 1914, it was reported that Oliver flew around the pyramids along with a passenger identifed as "Baron von Richthofen."

Can anyone tell me if this would have been the Richthofen later known as the "Red Baron." If it was, is there any chance this would have been his first ride in an airplane?

Thanks for your feedback.

You can be 100% sure that it was NOT Manfred von Richthofen. He had a (very) calm life in the German province in those days. I do not think we will be able to identify this Baron von Richthofen - but you can contact the family directly < Familienverband von Richthofen: Geburtstage > and ask them. Perhaps he was a man of the diplomatic corps in those days...
