It should also be pointed out that the revolutionary Sopwith Kennel was the only aircraft that combined a self-contained hangar with the pilot's accommodations.

It is rumoured that a conspiracy by Nissen and Bessoneau, who stood to lose thousands of pounds, prevented its widespread adoption by the RFC.

The real reason for the withdrawal of the "Kennel" was the dislike pilots had for it. It was hard to pull out of a dive and was considered a real "dog".

O.K.,I'm out of here.

Apparently a member of the RFC top-brass crashed an early production Kennel and the type was 'in the dog house' for the rest of the war.

Ouch!

A thing the pilots didn't like with the Sopwith Kennel was the fact that they had to be chained to the kennel at night.

Also the test pilots had a bad habit of humping the legs of the visiting Generals when they came to see the trials.. *;D :P

One can't help but admire the sturdy but clean lines of the type. The internally braced monoplane wing with the inverted dihedral with no wires rivals Fokker's cleanest designs.

I'll bet the ground crewmen must've been loath to clean up the cockpit of the Sopwith "Kennel" after a dogfight. Or was that maybe a weapon of sorts? Doubled as a bomber! I believe I saw personal markings painted on the side of one example in a rare photo... "Doo doo"

However, mechanics must've loved the ease at replacing the cowling after a nose over with the stock dog dish from RFC stores.
