By the way, "Suzy" is a great film (from 1936) for aviation buffs too. It stars Jean Harlow (post Hell's Angels), Cary Grant and Franchot Tone. Harlow is a showgirl who falls in love with French ace Cary Grant and marries him, only to find out he's an unfaithful cad.

Some great aviation footage of SE5a's and other goodies.

Just saw most of it and concur w/Greg's assessment. Of course, we GW aerophiles learn something all the time--that Escadrille 14 flew SE-5s cleverly disguised with SPA.48's emblem. (Would that be Esc. SE.14?)

Hi There,

Thanks Aerobuff!

Haven't seen it, but "Today We Live" features Gary Cooper as a bomber pilot, one of the romantic interests for Joan Crawford. Apparently almost all of the aerial sequences were lifted from "Hell's Angels". I don't know how much aviation-related footage was actually shot for the movie. There's also some torpedo boat work.

Haven't seen "British Intelligence" either, but the footage of a bomber attack it contains was lifted mostly from "Dawn Patrol". There's a comparative clip somewhere on Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI3iX-wJh9w

There are a few shots of a Friedrichshafen model intertwined with the shots from DP. Ironically, the German bomber is seen bombing "German installations" in the ground footage from "Danw Patrol".

"Grand Illusion" is, of course, a masterpiece. There's no film of airplanes, but a number of the characters are aviators, including Jean Gabin as a French POW and Erich von Stroheim as the prison camp CO (with his neck in a brace - the archetype of a Prussian officer), who - earlier - shot down and captured the two French aviators who are main characters. Gabin plays working-class Lieutenant Maréchal and von Stroheim plays Rittmeister von Rauffenstein. When I saw Gabin in a French aviator's outfit, I thought he would have been perfect to play Nungesser...

The Big Parade

I caught about an hour of "The Big Parade" (too late to watch a 3-hour movie !), and seemed like an interesting movie. What amazed me the most was its visual quality: it didn't have any of that herky-jerky fast motion usually associated with silent flicks, and the clarity was astounding. I don't know if this movie had been restored or if TCM had gotten hold of a well preserved original, but it looked like a recently made "old" movie (reminded me of "The Artist").

Greg's post about Grand Illusion reminds me that v. Stroheim is Jastafuhrer Ein who reports downing a Caudron (or something) but IIRC the escadrille sign said MF.something. More of those persistent recognition problems!

Watched a goodly part of The Big Parade and LORD but it's tedious. Pacing is glacial. I think it ran 2 1/2 hrs and by the time I started viewing it had taken 1 1/2 just to get to the front. However, Vidor knew his way around a camera, as some of the views are memorable.

Thanks as always, Aerobuff!

As Smiley the pilot indicates, only "The Last Flight" seems to have much to do with aviation, and even then just in the intro.

The screenplay is by John Monk Saunders, who wrote the screenplays/stories for so many of our beloved aviation films: Wings, Dawn Patrol, Ace of Aces, the Eagle and the Hawk, and many others.

"The Last Flight" is apparently his attempt to cash in on the "Lost Generation" theme made popular by Hemingway. Richard Barthelmess - the original star of the original 1930 "Dawn Patrol" - plays an ex-flier in 1920's Paris, etc. The film looks like it utilizes a lot of footage from "Dawn Patrol" in the opening scenes - but this time Barthelmess is flying a two-seater,

Of course, many of the other films playing Friday are worth a look too!
