Nice work TP! I really love this plane, but I'm afraid at this scale it's too big to my apartment.

Hi, Everyone,

It's been a while since I posted on this thread, but I can assure you that I have been busy on the J.1: some work on the engine, but mostly work on the paint colours and the camouflage pattern. To that end, I visited the Canada Aviation Museum yesterday, and came away with about sixty photos of the upper surfaces.

I'm now able (I hope!) to start mapping out the patterns on outlines of the flying surfaces. Here are a few photos:

Left Horizontal Stabilizer -

Right Horizontal Stabilizer -

Left Lower Wing -

Using my ancient PhotoPaint program, I'll increase/decrease the contrast and brightness to bring out the best delineation of the pattern. Then, using the corrugation and the riveting patterns (that provide a ready-made reference grid) I'll draw the pattern onto tracings of the flying surfaces. That done, I'll have my guide to airbrush the patterns onto the model. On one hand, it's great to have such a reference close by. On the other, I have no reason whatsoever to get the patterns wrong! More to come, but I'm not sure just when!

Hi, P-26luvr,

And thanks for your encouragement. I really appreciate it! This will take some time, but I expect that it will be at least satisfactory. There is something about "the old bird" in Ottawa that makes me want to do my best to build it right within my own modelling limitations. Currently I'm transcribing the cam patterns onto my wing outlines, but there are many things bidding for my time, as you can imagine. However, progress continues, and I'll put out updates as I move forward. Thanks again!

Trackpad, SIR, Will you be adding your camoflage pattern drawings to this build article? Like you the plane up in Canada has facinated me as well. I found a W/A on a site not too long ago, & that is inspirimg. Carl T

Yes, I plan to do that, probably by scanning the diagrams and placing them here. It is more of a job than I thought, but progress is being made. So far I've got the fin, rudder (all white: no problem!), and elevators drawn and painted. I'm now doing the horizontal stabilizer, and then comes the real challenge: wings!
