Treadwell: "Knights of the Black Cross" Decent read or junk?:

I just ordered a couple of WWI aviation books, including this one:

Knights Of The Black Cross: German Fighter Aces Of The First World War by Terry C. Treadwell (Cerberus Publishing Ltd. 2005)

It sounded good, the price was right, and it had a nice cover. But then I read a review at Amazon.com and it was harshly condemed as being very sloppily written and edited plus full of glaring mistakes and errors.

Have I just wasted my money or is the book at all a decent read?

Thanks!

Nobody owns or has read this "Knights of the Black Cross" book?

I also ordered "Eagles of the Black Cross" by Walter Musciano and Greg Vanwyngarden's
"Early German Aces of World War I" (Osprey).

Sure aren't many books about WWI Imperial German aircraft compared to WWII Luftwaffe. That which I've seen so far is often dry technical data or geared toward modelers.

I enjoy the human interest side with a hefty dose of aircraft capabilities, weaponry, and motor engineering tossed in. Haven't found that so far....

Kanone, check this thread out

http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/bo...e-books-2.html

The bashing Treadwell book receives is just nitpicking. The book is a very good introduction to the subject, far cheaper than collecting all the Osprey German Aces books (though they are a must have). It's an enjoyable read, all books add to your collection and knowledge, some more, some less, but this is far from being a bad book.

Good Evening.
I've got the book and i've got to agree with Romani on this one, it's a damn fine introduction to the personnel of the German Air Service. It's got its problems but there are plenty other cross references out there. My shelves are full of "discredited" books. There is no such thing as a bad booki
I've just had Germany's War in the Air, by Hoeppner, delivered and on first glance it looks as dry as dust, but i'll read it and I fully expect it to increase my knowledge of what went on in these days.
We will always have the nitpickers, so read everything and make up your own mind.

With regards,
Mike.

P.S.
Romani, Spain would want to pick up their socks, I expext Brazil to win but the Fatherland are looking ominous.

Thanks for the info.

Today I ordered "Under the Guns of the Red Baron." Found it used at a good price.

That's four new books which should keep me busy for awhile. I'll report back with my opinions of these works.
