Sopwith Triplane in 3D

My first WIP. C & C very much appreciated. I have been using blueprints from airwars.ru so it isnt as detailed as I would like. I can only make out the front potions of the Clerget engine, would love to do the back portions but no references. almost no detail on cockpit area so Im hoping to do a static image. Possibly infront of a hanger.

Sorry for the abrubt intro...my internet connection is acting up and not sure how long it will stay up.

The modelling was done in Blender 2.43 and rendered in Yafray 0.9. no material added yet just a GI render. This version I am trying to reproduce is the plane exhibited at the Calgary Air Museum since I am mainly using those photos for reference. I am currently getting everything UV mapped for texturing.

My Gallery
Hi redgrun
nice to see somebody new here doing 3D work.

model looks good..
but, you might want to put some dihedral on those wings.
kind of a distinctive feature.
hard to see the smaller details.
but the prop looks a little funky - that sharp edge on the tip in particular.

as for the clerget.
looks good to me.
although, it looks like you have too many cooling fins on the top of the cylinders
as for the back - it isn't realy visible from almost any angle.
but, If you want, I have a plan i could send that might clarify things a little

I also modeled this plane a while back
never realy did much with it, which is a shame as I have about 20 different color schemes textured out.
but one of these days
if your intrested here's the links:

looking forward to seeing your textures.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear that was Eduard's Tripe with a coat of gray primer ! Nice job.

redgrund- Welcome to the Forum and, based on your model, I hope we see a lot more of you. Mark's rendering of the Clerget should be all you need to complete your Clerget model, but, if not, here are some more drawings.

Thanks for all your kind words of encouragement. Ive just done the base colors with a little bit of bumpmapping. The underside should be a lighter color though. Weathering should go on next, need to find out more about the fabric material and textures.

Thanks so much Mark, your work is simply stunning. It clarified quite alot of areas which I wasnt so sure about. Photo's are a great reference but still cant show as much detail. Ive redone the propeller blade hope that it looks a little more credible. Im still workin on the wings as it has alot of errors.

Nothing to criticize : it looks great, can't wait to see it textured! I especially like the engine details.
Speaking of details, would you mind posting a wire of your Vickers machine-gun?

I've modelled a low-poly one and the barrel seems to be a tricky thing to model in high-poly (you can see some of it there : http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/sh...highlight=se5a). Cheers !

Regrund,

I had a very hard time telling if it was a real model when you showed it in gray tones. I think it is beautiful. Is it a very time consuming process? For instance, can you estimate how much time you have into it so far??

Secondly, what use, beyond just a piece of wonderful art, would you have of it when completed. This is not a dig, I just was wondering because it is computer art, can you make it fly or do you show it as a static display?

In any case, it is terrific.

Phil
