Hi Russell,

I just want to commend you for the work you did on your painting of Barker's last fight. It is exceptional! I remember you asking for advice on colors of the German units that may have been involved in the dogfight that day. Do I see a hint of JGIVb colors on the Fokkers?

regards

Thanks so much for your compliments WingedWarrior. Actually, if you try hard, you can probably detect hints of several different units on the DVIIs. In my research I had hoped to at least narrow the list of units in that area on that date down to one or two. In the end, however, the decision on what markings to use for the DVIIs ended up being a purely aesthetic one. I needed the DVIIs to sit back and let Barker's Snipe take center stage. The earth tones of the noses allowed them to do that. Same story for the 4 color lozenge (the red tones in 5 color lozenge would have made the DVIIs visually too strong). The black tail on the large DVII allwed me to create the necessary visual space between it and the nose of the Snipe. I tried to keep the individual markings low key as well.

I've gotten a lot of good response to this image. If the DVII giclee does well I will probably offer this one as my next giclee.

Hi Russ,

I do remember that your intent was 'generic Fokkers. To me, the inverted 'vee' on the lower D.VII reminds me of Jasta 35b markings, while the black tail of the other could be from Jasta 32b. Great job on the selection of colors. Your work is quite convincing. Good luck with the giclee prints.

regards,

Darren
