Manfred von's Uniform

I'm painting a bust of Manfred von Richthofen which is sculpted with him wearing his Uhlan's double-breasted tunic. Can anyone help with the color of the epaulettes. They have been sculpted with a crown over a scroll-work A and the Roman numeral three.

Hope this helps. The picture shows the colors of the field-uniform of Königlich-Preußisches Ulanen-Regiment Kaiser Alexander III. von Rußland ( Westpreußisches ) Nr. 1 (what a long name ), which was MvR's Stammregiment. Those colors were from the year 1908. Dont't know if there has been specifications in 1914...

Tnanks, much. The epaulette's shape in the pic' is different from the ones on my figure, which lack the bulb at the bottom. But I think the colors are good. They also correspond to some BW pics of Richthofen. These show him wearing epaulettes outlined with piping that was paler in color than both the uniform and the red piping on the tunic, so the white surround in your pic makes good sense. He would be wearing officer's shoulder boards (silverthread with a golden chiffre).

Sorry. But what the heck is s chiffre? And does this mean the boards in the posted pics are for enlisted men?

Hello,

fieldgray fabric boards are only for enlisted men indeed, the officers wore simple shoulder boards (not the special form as on the picture) in silver thread (with a small, nearly unvisible on distant, thread in it to show the state's colours, in Prussia black). The chiffre was the number of the regiment or in some cases as here a whole of scrolled letters.
