More informed speculation from 35 years ago: Immelman was coming straight in at Waller when he (Waller fired.) Since Waller's gun was not synchronized with Immelman's airscrew, it is possible that the blade was split and the windscreen shattered. It is also within the realm of possibility that the crash obliterated the evidence of a caliber .303 bullet between the square goggles Immelman wore. The Germans were not thrilled that a corporal shot down their great ace, so the propaganda mill began to grind, with all of the usual suspects making unfounded statements.
