Over in "People" we were debating whether MvR really couldn't find silver after victory cup no. 60, or he just lost interest in having more of them made. This award shows you didn't have to be the Red Baron to find silver, even as late as summer 1918.
This silver cocktail shaker was presented to 8-kill ace Ltn
Kurt Monnington by fellow pilots of Jasta 18 for his 5th and 6th confirmed kills on 13 August 1918. A DH9 from No. 104 Sqdn. collided with another DH9 while avoiding Monnington's fire, and he got credit for both.
It is engraved:
Dem ruhmvollen Kampfflieger fur seine hervoraggenden Leistungen im Luftkampf den 13. Aug. 1918
The base is marked "0.835" and "PV" which I'm told is a Dutch silversmith, and that silver was readily available in neutral Holland. It is quite heavy and measures 10 inches tall. Note his distinctive insignia of a skull on the top of the shaker.
This thing was a bitch to photograph so the mirror finish was dulled down for the shots...
