Did fancy flying matter much in air combat?

It seems to me that the most successful aces dispensed with fancy flying maneuvers and just charged in to shoot, like Albert Ball. Great pilots like Voss where not common. From what I read, Richthofen was an aggressive hunter and good shot, but not really a good pilot. Other than coming out of the sun, shooting from under the blind spot of a two-seater planes, or diving to attack and climbing for altitude again to strike, most successful fighter pilots never did engage in fancy maneuvers in twist and turn aerial combat. Am I correct?
