Captains A.S. Keep and O. Horsley--Aces?
Gentlemen:
Forum members with access to communiques, brigade summaries, and
squadron operations books/diaries can probably clarify whether the
following two airmen were aces: Capt. Arthur Stuart Keep, M.C.,Royal
Warwickshire Regiment & RFC/RAF, 55 Sqn., pilot (with Lt. W..
Patey, observer, on several missions). Keep's M.C. citation is
not helpful for confirming his victory total.
Capt. Oswald Horsley, M.C. & Bar,
Gordon Highlanders & RFC/RAF, whose award citation for the Bar to
M.C. states: "He has brought down completely out of control three
hostile machines, and two others which he engaged one he fought
to within a distance of 200 feet from the ground, forcing it to land,
the second spinning down to the ground out of control, he being
unable to observe it crash owing to the presence of other hostile
machines." Years ago, H.H. Russell said Horsley had 5 victories;
given Forum comments about "driven down" and "forced to land"
E.A. what is the consensus today? Horsley was KIFA 19 August
1918, in U.K.
