Pardon me for reopening a topic long considered settled, but in examining my copy of the Ferko Collection photograph of Uffz Beaumer's Jasta 5 Albatros (or more specifically, the one that is the subject of my R/C model) I'm left wondering if the long held conclusion that the red border of the empannage on "Green Tail" machines is the same red that covers the rear of the fuselage, since there seems to be a contrast between the border stripe and the adjacent fuselage color. Moreover, this "red" color has the same gloss and tonal value as the adjacent (white outlined) Eisernkreuz, which I presume to be standard black.
Additionally, the color band overpainted on the red fuselage (underlying the Edelweiss symbol) has a flat or dull character which (to my eye) matches the border surrounding the green tail surfaces. This leads me to interpret the colors differently, i.e. the color beginning at the rear of the cockpit back to the tail is black, and the color band on which the Edelweiss is located is the same red as the border on the green tail. The contemporary description given of the scheme indicates the flower was situated on a red background (if memory serves) and my interpretation doesn't technically contradict the reference. Photograph with enhanced detail attached. Anyone agree, or not?.........John
