In flight communication - basic question

I am not speaking about the internal communication in double seaters or communication with very lights or other technical means here.

You know aviators used signs with the arms, hands and other parts of the body to communicate in the air if they flew in formation. You could see that also very well in one of Chromiums - now deleted - clips from German WWI movies of the 30's.

I wonder if any source did ever give any overview about the used signs and their meanings in the different Air Forces, about the development of these signs and if there was a common standard used in the Air Services?

Was there ever anything published about these questions in the past in scientific books or articles? Or did all historians ignore this question?

(Forgive my ignorance if anything important escaped me when I thought about this question.)
